We recently spoke to an Audit Partner at a Top 10 firm who helped make the move out of Big 4 around 12 months ago. We caught up with them to discuss how the move has gone and reflect on their first year in the new role.

Making the decision to leave behind over two decades at a Big 4 firm was undoubtedly a pivotal moment in my career. It was a decision not taken lightly, but one that I can confidently say was the right move for my professional growth and aspirations. Stepping into my new role as an Audit Partner in a Top 10 accountancy firm brought with it a mix of nerves and excitement, but it didn't take long for me to realise it was the right next step in my career.

Stepping into the unknown

In the initial weeks and months, I was presented with new challenges and tasks that stretched me professionally in ways I hadn't experienced in years. Working across a diverse client portfolio exposed me to a breadth of issues and demands, which was stimulating and pushed me to evolve.

Transitioning into a new department for the firm, particularly one focused on audit growth, injected a sense of excitement, I imagine something similar to a start-up. Being part of a team driving expansion while simultaneously leveraging my leadership skills was refreshing. Collaborating with fellow partners to shape and implement the strategy for the department allowed me to contribute my wealth of experience from the Big 4, while also learning and adapting to new approaches.

What struck me most about my new firm was the freedom and encouragement to innovate and introduce fresh ideas. Unlike the rigid structures I was accustomed to, here I found a culture that embraced creativity and initiative, empowering me to make meaningful contributions from the outset.

Joining an established Partnership

Despite initial apprehensions about transitioning without an established portfolio, I was met with unwavering support from my colleagues. Sharing leads and receiving guidance allowed me to swiftly immerse myself in business development activities, reigniting a passion for winning new work that had been untapped in my previous role.

Taking on the mantle of Partner brought its own set of adjustments. Yet, from my very first day, I felt welcomed into the partnership and seamlessly integrated into the firm's leadership. The supportive environment and transparent communication fostered a sense of belonging and enabled me to hit the ground running.

Compared to the Big 4, the agility and responsiveness of decision-making within my new firm were like night and day. Here, I felt heard and valued, with decisions made swiftly and decisively, both internally and in client-facing scenarios.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance has always been a priority for me, and I'm pleased to say that my new firm shares these values. The hybrid working model, allows me to split my time between the office and to work remotely from home.

Career Planning Advice

Reflecting on this transformative journey, if I was to give advice to myself 12-18 months ago I would urge myself to explore opportunities earlier in my career, to broaden my understanding of the market and potential paths. Avoiding tunnel vision and staying open to new possibilities is crucial, as is aligning with firms that share my values and vision from the outset.

In conclusion, my first 12 months in this new role have been nothing short of fulfilling and exciting. I've grown professionally, embraced fresh challenges, and found a sense of belonging in a firm that values innovation, collaboration, and work-life balance. And as I look ahead, I'm excited for the continued growth and opportunities that lie on this rewarding path.
